If you’ve ever shopped around for firewood, you’ve probably seen suppliers advertising a “tonne bag of logs.” At first glance, it sounds straightforward — a tonne means 1,000kg, right?

Not exactly.

One of the most common misconceptions in the firewood industry is what the term “tonne bag” actually means. In most cases, it doesn’t mean you’re getting a tonne of logs at all.

What a “Tonne Bag” Really Is

A tonne bag (sometimes called a bulk bag or builder’s bag) is simply a large bag designed to hold up to one tonne of material. It’s the type commonly used on building sites for sand, gravel, or aggregates.

The key point is this:

The name refers to the bag’s capacity — not the weight of the logs inside it.

Logs are bulky and full of air gaps, so they simply don’t pack in the same way that sand or gravel does. Because of this, a bag filled with firewood will almost never weigh anywhere near a tonne.

Why a Real Tonne of Logs Would Be a Problem

If a tonne bag actually did contain 1,000kg of logs, it would almost certainly mean one thing:

The logs would be very wet.

Freshly cut or poorly seasoned wood contains a lot of moisture. Water is heavy, so wet logs weigh far more than properly dried firewood.

That might sound good at first — more weight for your money — but in reality it’s the opposite of what you want.

Wet logs:

  • Burn poorly

  • Produce less heat

  • Create more smoke

  • Can contribute to chimney tar and soot buildup

Properly dried firewood should be dry and ready to burn, which means it will naturally weigh much less than a tonne when placed in a bulk bag.

How We Do Things Differently

We believe customers deserve clarity about exactly what they’re buying.

On our website, when we refer to a “tonne bag”, we’re being transparent about what that means in practical terms.

When we filled the tonne bag used in our website photo, it took 15 nets of logs to fill it.

That’s why when you purchase our tonne bag option, what you actually receive is:

15 × 40-litre nets of logs

This ensures you receive the same volume that fills the bag shown on our website, rather than an ambiguous pile of loose logs.

Clear Pricing Per Net

Another advantage of this approach is transparency in pricing.

Because the logs are delivered as individual nets, you can clearly see the price per net and understand exactly what you're paying for. There are no vague estimates or assumptions.

What you see is exactly what you get.

Not All Log Nets Are the Same

If you’ve ever picked up a net of logs from a supermarket or DIY store, you may have noticed they tend to disappear quickly once they’re on the fire.

That’s because many retail nets are:

  • Smaller — often 22L or 30L, not 40L

  • Filled with faster-burning species such as birch or alder

Our nets are different.

We supply 40-litre nets filled with premium hardwood (ash) logs.

Ash is widely considered one of the best firewood species because it:

  • Burns slowly and evenly

  • Produces excellent heat output

  • Creates long-lasting embers

This means you get better value and longer burn times from every net.

Honest Firewood, Clearly Supplied

The phrase “tonne bag” can be confusing, and unfortunately it’s often used in ways that lead customers to assume they’re buying a tonne of logs.

Our goal is simple: be clear, honest, and consistent about what we supply.

When you order from us, you know exactly what will arrive:

15 × 40-litre nets of premium ash logs — the same volume used to fill the tonne bag shown on our website.

No guesswork. No misleading descriptions. Just quality firewood delivered the way it should be.
